What is the minimum CELPIP Score?

Applying for immigration in Canada will help you get it quicker if you have a CELPIP test score in your hand. With that said, most of the people who are applying for Canada wonder what is the minimum score that they need to pass the test. Most people compare CELPIP with IELTS which should not be done as the two tests are based on different judgments and are marked for different proficiencies.

The minimum CELPIP score that you need to get citizenship in Canada is not very high but a rather moderate good score. Therefore you need to get a 7 CLB score. And in case you are wondering what a CLB 7 score is then here is what you need to know.

The level of both CELPIP and CLB goes up to 12 starting from 1. All of these levels are the scores that determine how good you are when it comes to speaking the English language. Each score has a category that mirrors your communication skills. 

Scoring 0, 1 and 2

If you get scores ranging between 0, 1, and 2 that means you do not have excessive knowledge of the language and thus you won’t be given citizenship in the country. To pass you need to do more than these minimal scores and the best method is to prepare for the test if you feel like you lack in some areas. 

The test level descriptor says that the following score is minimum proficiency and insufficient information which further clarifies that you cannot get the Canadian nationality. The CLB scores for this descriptor ranges from 0 to 2 while the CELPIP score shows an M which means minimal. 

Scoring 3

This score is the same for both CLB and CELPIP. If you are scoring a three in your CELPIP test then that means you have a little proficiency and that too in limited areas. As you know that the CELPIP entrance exam tests you for the basics of English from speaking to reading, scoring this number means that there are areas where your proficiency is lacking. You need to learn more if you are determined to get a Canadian passport. 

Scoring 4

The test level descriptor describes this number as having an adequate level of proficiency and that too for only the daily life activities. But since you need to go out and communicate with others during your office hours and other times as well, hence this score is not enough for you to get the nationality of Canada.  

Scoring 5

As you get a score of 5 the test level descriptor describes it as trying to acquire proficiency in workplace and community contexts. What you need to remember is that this level doesn’t mean that you will get the nationality, it only shows that you are learning the language which is needed for the workspaces. 

Scoring 6

The next score which is score 6 describes that you are on your way to developing the language skills for a workplace. Although it is not yet enough for you to gain citizenship, it shows that you are working on your language skills and slowly you are developing them. If you can get to this number then don’t worry as you can achieve the average score as well. All you need is a little bit of practice and you will be on your way to score a 7 and Canadian citizenship.

Scoring 7

Now, this is the average score that is needed for you to be eligible for the nationality of the country. Having a 7 CLB and CELPIP score means that you have adequate information about the language spoken in workplaces and communities. If you are successful in scoring a 7 CLB score on your CELPIP exam it means that your immigration process will be much easier. Keep in mind that a 7 score lies just in the middle from least to highest which means that it is not necessary to achieve exceptional scores in the test.   

Scoring 8

From 7 onwards are the scores that show how proficient you are. And if you are scoring more than 7 while having English as your second language then this is indeed a remarkable score for you. Scoring an 8 on the test means that you have good proficiency in the language in both workplaces and the community. 

Scoring 9

This score is marked as having an effective proficiency in the workplaces and communities. Spring a 9 on the CELPIP exam means that you don’t need to learn the language as you are already familiar with it. If you want to score a 9 on the exam then we suggest you engage yourself with the language as much as you are engaged with your mother tongue or native language. 

Scoring 10

This can be seen as the start from where your language skills are compared to those of the natives. With a 10 score on your test, there is a highly likely chance that your skills will be compared to those of people living there since their birth. This gives you more exposure and also the confidence that you need in a country totally strange. 

Scoring 11 and 12 

The advanced level of English language ability is marked by these scores. Scoring an 11 or 12 doesn’t even let others compare you to the natives as it places you right next to them. These scores are exceptionally brilliant and for people who have their first language as a different language than English, it gets a bit difficult to achieve this score.  

To say CELPIP is easy would be wrong but yes we can say that the rule of the average scoring point is very satisfactory. They do not require you to score a complete 11 or 12 for you to be eligible for the nationality. With a minimum of 7 and a maximum of 12 scores, the difficulties lying between you and the Canadian passport drops to a minimum. Sometimes being average works, doesn’t it?
