How CELPIP Score is Calculated?

CELPIP is an English language proficiency test, abbreviated for the Canadian English Language Proficiency Index Program. Before starting preparation for the CELPIP test, every candidate must have a deep insight into its details. One must know about the levels, time duration, and foremostly the minimum and the maximum extremes of scores. Once you have given the test, here is the most important question to be addressed: how the CELPIP score is calculated? 

The answer for this lies in knowing the criteria of the CELPIP test. That is to say, CELPIP scores range from 1-to 12 levels. Further, the test consists of 4 portions: listening, reading, writing, and speaking. Therefore, a candidate has to maintain a score between 1-12 for each of these sections separately.

CELPIP Scoring Levels 

CELPIP exam scores are named CELPIP Levels. Firstly, the score a candidate gets determines not only the level of his proficiency in English but also decides the chances of his selection.

Secondly, another thing worth considering is the CLB level. 

CLB Levels 

CLB Stands for Canadian Language Benchmarks. Moreover, these are divided into 3 stages ( 1-4, 5-8, 9-12) and 12 CELPIP levels.

 Most importantly, this level determines the minimum score you obtain in all four sections of the CELPIP test.

For example: If a person scores 7 in reading, 8 in listening, 5 in speaking, and 6 in writing, then the CLB level is 5.

CELPIP Listening Scores 

In addition to the above table, here are the details of the listening session: 

• The time for the listening test is 47-55 minutes. 
• The number of questions a candidate has to attempt in this time duration is 40-46 questions. And, these are divided into 7 components.
• This portion has a total of 38 Scoring marks. 

CELPIP Reading Scores 

To clarify, here are the details of the CELPIP Reading Session: 

• The time for the reading test is 55-60 minutes. 
• The candidate has to attempt 38-45 questions. Therefore, these are divided into 4 components. 
• This portion has a total of 38 scoring marks.

The listening and the reading scores will be computerized. 

CELPIP Writing Scores 

Similarly, here are the details of the writing section: 

• The time for the writing test is 53-60 minutes. 
• The questions are divided into two parts. These are as follows:

1. Writing an email. 
2. Responding to survey questions. 

Similarly, the writing scores are manually given by the examiners. They mark the CELPIP levels considering the answers into 4 categories that consist of different factors. To clarify further, these are given in the table below: 

CELPIP Speaking Scores 

Here are the details of the Speaking section: 

• The time for the Speaking test is 15-20 minutes. 
• The candidate has to answer the 8 Questions that are divided into 8 components. 

The speaking scores are also given by other examiners. They consider the factors given below in the table according to different categories. 

How are the CELPIP scores finalized? 

The performance of a candidate is not judged by only one examiner. However, different raters assess the performance and the proficiency of the candidate. 

Here are the few factors that overall decide the CELPIP scoring levels: 

Rating Criteria   

Listening and reading tests are automatically recorded and scored on the computer. But the speaking scores will be given by 3 speaking raters and the writing scores will be given by four writing raters. Further, these ratings will be given on the above 4 categories given in the table for speaking and writing. 

Benchmarking 

To bring the results of all the raters to the same agreement, a final rating will be considered from the benchmark rater. However, without knowing the initial rating, the benchmark raters assess the accuracy in performance. Most importantly, they make a decision based on their experience. After that, a final CELPIP score is given. 

Final Scoring of All Levels

After that, all the scores are assessed by keeping in view the table of scores and the levels. The scores of all four portions are then assigned four CELPIP levels. Consequently, after 4-5 days, you will get the final results.
