1. Listening
- Listen to the recording once
Just like the IELTS exams, in the CELPIP listening test, each recording can listen once. You will have to listen to the recording carefully from the beginning to the end. After the recording ends, write down the information required by answering the questions. Try practicing it, by listening to the recording once and answering all the questions at the end for at least 20 different recordings.
- Write some notes for important points
It is really hard to understand the complete recording once. So you need to write important points or aspects while you are hearing the recording. It helps you remember all the important information that you need while answering the questions in the end. It helps you better understand the topic while answering the questions later.
- Don’t waste time on one or two points
While you’re listening to the recording, you may not understand some points. It is important that you don’t pay too much attention to those points because it will waste your time and focus on the recording. You must write those ambiguous points and analyze them after the recording finishes. Remember, you need to save as much time as possible for the questions answers session.
Question Answer Listening Tips
- Answer most easy questions at first
If you cannot answer a question, don’t waste your time on it and leave it for the end. Remember, the time can be a difference between a high score or a low score. You can save more time by writing some important points you remember about the question that is confusing and leaves it for the end to complete the answer.
Always keep an eye on the clock during the test and make sure you have enough time to complete all the questions. You can do so by giving equivalent time to each question.
Always double-check your answer before moving to the next one. This will save your time to go back to the previous question again and re-check. The more time you save, the more time you will have for the next question.
- Guess the confusing questions at end
Don’t leave any blank spaces in your answer sheet. Try guessing the answer as sometimes it can earn you a point or two. It is important that you do this step when you’ve solved all the known questions and have extra time left at the end.
You can do this by practicing it on Radio programs, or Television News. While listening to the radio or TV, write down the important points such as Headlines, News time, Reported location, Involved parties, etc. On TV talk shows, many people raise questions for discussion that you can answer for your practice.
