Types of CELPIP

CELPIP has two main categories, namely: the General Test and the LS test.

CELPIP – General

The general test evaluates your writing, reading, speaking, and learning English skills. This is an official test for permanent residency purposes. Moreover, most of the professional designations accept it. 

In addition to that, it has four components: reading, writing, listening, and speaking. The test approximately takes 3 hours including a speaking session. Here is the breakdown of the time:

• Almost 55 minutes are for listening to a passage and then answering the questions.
• About 55-60 minutes are for reading a passage and then answering the questions. 
• 53-60 minutes are to answer the questions
• 15-20 minutes to reply to on-screen prompts verbally. 

Lastly, the fee for this test is around $280+ tax. 

Celpip – General LS test

This test is used for citizenship application and professional designation. This test evaluates a person’s speaking and listening skills. It takes almost one hour to complete in one sitting without the requirement of a spare speaking session. The test is IRCC approved for Canadian citizenship applications.

Moreover, you will have 1 hour and 10 minutes for this test. Here is the breakdown of the time:

• 47-55 minutes are for listening to passages and answering the questions.
• The remaining 15-20 minutes are for replying to on-screen prompts verbally.

In addition to that, the test fee is 195$+tax. 

Who accepts the CELPIP test?

A number of colleges, universities. professional organizations and employers accept the CELPIP test officially. 

CELPIP vs IELTS

Both tests evaluate your language proficiency. CELPIP has a slightly stronger emphasis on functional language than IELTS. Scoring for both tests is also different. For CELPIP, there is a score of 1 to 12 for each section which is in line with the Canadian language benchmark. For IELTS, the score test for each section is 1 to 9. While comparing the difficulty of both tests, one cannot decide which one is difficult. Both tests are challenging and you need a good level of English and some serious preparation. You must choose your test based on which test is useful for you and which test is more relevant for your career/future. 

CIC

CIC stands for citizenship and immigration in Canada. It is a Canadian federal government department that facilitates the arrival of immigrants to Canada, provides protection to refugees, and offers different programs to facilitate the newcomers in the country. They grant citizenship to immigrants, issue travel documents to Canadians, and promote multiculturalism. CIC is now known as IRCC (immigration, refugees, and citizenship Canada). This name became common in 2016 when the new government took office. The word refugees were added to it to show that the government focuses on humanitarian and refugee immigration to Canada. 

Passing score
