Is CELPIP accepted for Canadian immigration?
If you are thinking about immigrating to any First world country, then you must consider Canada. The opportunities which you are going to get there are immense. There are different ways in which you can immigrate to Canada. Unlike other countries, Canada is thought to be more immigrant-friendly.
One of the ways to immigrate to Canada is through Express entry. Skilled workers who want to contribute to the growth of Canada are welcomed. Apart from this, there is a sponsorship program where some relatives from Canada can invite you there. Then there are provincial nominee programs that are outside of express entry, where you nominate a province or territory. If you can fulfill the requirements of that province then you are good to go. In this regard, families wishing to settle in Quebec province are subject to fewer requirements. And lastly, there is a different stream for investors, entrepreneurs, and the self-employed.
Before applying for immigration straight away, you should keep in mind some requirements. If you are not a native speaker then you have to prove language proficiency. So that, you can be a functioning member of Canadian society. A Higher score on this test will make it easier to get a visa. Therefore, make sure to give your best.
With that, a question might cross your mind: Is CELPIP accepted for Canada’s immigration?
The simple answer would be yes. Canadian English language Proficiency Index Program was solely designed for this purpose. Keep in mind that there are two types of CELPIP tests. One is CELPIP general and the other is CELPIP LS. The difference in both types is that in CELPIP General there are 4 components of the test, while CELPIP LS has two components. Do not forget that for immigration, CELPIP General is necessary.
However, it is not the only proficiency test which Canadian authorities accept. The alternative to CELPIP is IELTS. Both the tests judge the test taker on 4 skills. Which are English reading, writing, listening, and speaking. These are the skills that are necessary to carry out day to day tasks in Canada

CELPIP or IELTS, which is better for Canada’s immigration?
As mentioned above, these both are the options when it comes to proving English proficiency for Canadian immigration. You will not be given a favor or penalty for choosing either. Nonetheless, there are some similarities and differences which you have to keep in mind.
Similarities
First, let’s talk about similarities. They both are independent test-taking bodies, which approves whether you are ready to live in an English-speaking environment or not. The format of these tests is as such where there is a separate section for every skill. Every skill has a separate time limit. The next similarity would be that they both have an expiration date. After two years your score is not considered valid. This is because you improve in these skills if only you practice them regularly. Two years gap means you might have put a full stop to practicing these skills.
Another similarity is that both tests consider both American and British spellings, and also accept all accents. If you have a neutral or biased accent, you do not have to worry about that. Lastly, the time for both the tests, which is officially stated, is 3 hours give or take.
Differences
Now, the differences. First and foremost, the difference between the two tests is that CELPIP is taken entirely on a computer. On the other hand, IELTS is taken on pen and paper which is a traditional style.
The next difference would be that at IELTS, an invigilator takes the speaking test face to face, while at CELPIP you have to speak on the computer. It works both ways, some are comfortable in speaking to a person, and some like computers more.
Another difference would be that the CELPIP test is taken in one sitting, but this is not the case with IELTS. For IELTS you have to come for two days to complete your test. Usually, IELTS takes more time than officially stated.
In addition, CELPIP is compatible with CLB ( Canada Language Benchmark) which means that the CLB score is the same as the CELPIP score. If we talk about IELTS then it is not compatible with CLB. This means that your IELTS score would be converted to a CLB scale. This compatibility would help you understand your score easily and your score goals would be clear to you.
The area where CELPIP has to catch up with IELTS is the widespread availability and acceptability of the test. The former is available in Canada and some other countries, while the latter is available in 144 countries. This also impacts the preparation materials and sharing of test experience.
Some people are not likely to opt for CELPIP because it is considered an unknown land for them. There is also a price difference where CELPIP is a little cheaper than IELTS. Although, It depends on where you are taking the test. If your test does not go as you prepared then, In CELPIP you have 6 months to re-evaluate but the IELTS has only 6 weeks.
Conclusion
At the end of the day, it is up to you which test you take. Every person has their preferences. That is why I started all the similarities and differences so people can make their minds. If you ask for my opinion, I would suggest you go with CELPIP if it is feasible (keeping in mind that Canada is your only destination). My argument for this would be that CELPIP is designed for Canadian society and taking this test will help you in the long run. The situations that you practice in this test would be more relatable to Canada.
However, if there is no CELPIP test center near you, there is no need to fuss about it. Just take IELTS which would be more feasible. The Canadian authorities just want to know if you are proficient in English.
