How many hours in the CELPIP exam?
Canada is one of the main attractions for students and immigrants. If you want to spend your life in peace and harmony, then Canada is for you. Canada has opened its arms to people who want to be a part of it. One reason for this could be that the Visa requirements of Canada are relatively easy. Then there is a significant population of immigrants whom the Canadian government has embraced as their own. Many of them can be seen in important positions all over Canada. This shows that merit is valued more than religion, color, and race. Just like every other good thing, residence in Canada also comes with some prerequisites. One of the conditions is having proficiency in the English language. To be proficient in English means that one understands and speaks it perfectly. To prove that, one has to pass the CELPIP exams.
So the question arises, how many hours are there in the CELPIP exam?
Canadian English Language Proficiency Index Program (CELPIP) generally lasts for 3 hours. The breakdown of the time duration is as follows:
- Listening: 47-55 minutes
- Reading: 55-60 minutes
- Writing: 53- 60 minutes
- Speaking 15-20 minutes
However, it may vary for CELPIP General LS, in which the test time is about 1h10m.

CELPIP is similar to IELTS, where one is put in different situations to see if they can function in English. The situations can be of class for students and workplace for professional designations. It is designed in such a way where it is not required for you to be Shakespeare. Everyday vocabulary is tested so that you can be a functional part of society. The questions in the test are very de-hyphenated, which means if you got one wrong then it would not affect other questions.

Types of Tests
Tests are available in two types. You can choose anyone according to your preference. The first type is the CELPIP general test, which is for people who want to apply for permanent residence. It is IRCC( Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada ) approved. This test is held for people outside of Canada. Fees for the test are $280+ taxes. This test finds out whether you can read, listen, write, and speak English or not. Every component of the test contains many questions. For reading, there are 6 parts with 28 questions and each part has a different topic. Then comes listening, which has 4 parts and 29 questions. While writing and speaking have 2 and 8 parts respectively. They have 2 and 8 questions in the same order.
On the other hand, there is the CELPIP general LS test, which is for people who want to apply for citizenship. It is also approved by IRCC. This test is primarily for people within Canada. They charge $195 +taxes for this test. Here, just Speaking and listening to English is tested. Both have 6 and 8 parts with 28 and 8 questions in their respective order.
Test Duration
You must be wondering, one has to sit for how many hours in the CElPIP exam. In the CELPIP general test, you have to spare 3 hours, while in the CELPIP general LS you have to sit for 1 hour 10 minutes. This time gap is because test components are less in the latter.
Test Criteria
To pass this exam there is a minimum criterion set. CELPIP scoring criteria are based on a Canadian immigration application, where the minimum score to pass a module is 7 for express entry, whereas the federal skilled worker program requires 4. If someone has exceptional skills then the highest they can score is 24. Results are announced online in 4 to 6 days after exams. You don’t have to apply in the center because the process is online. CELPIP in accordance with other tests
One of the questions which may arise is how the test is taken?. Unlike IELTS, CELPIP tests are computer-based rather than on paper. This does not mean that you can give the test at home. According to the policy of the CELPIP administration, candidates must be present in the center to take the test.
One problem with CELPIP tests is that it is not as worldwide acknowledged as IELTS and TOEFL are. If you are planning to apply to just Canada then it is perfect for you, but if you are applying to multiple places then this might not be a good idea.CElPIP also acknowledges this problem and they are working to resolve it. Currently, they have testing centers in Singapore, the United Arab Emirates, Philippines, India, China, the USA, and of course Canada. There will be more centers available in the future. If your country is not mentioned in the list then don’t worry. You can either go to one of the mentioned countries or can apply for a temporary, refugee, or tourist visa for Canada. Once you are in the country then you can apply at any of the test centers there.

It also has its advantages Vis-à-vis IELTS. The first one will be that it takes less time than IELTS and finishes in one sitting. Additionally, this test is closer to the ground reality of Canada. Another advantage is that the results announcement takes less time than that of IELTS. It is more efficient because of a computerized test which does not make your hands tired as much as writing with a pencil does. One thing that is similar in both tests is that they both have a validity of 2 years. Since it is computerized it is easier to keep track of time and assess overall performance in the test. And no time is wasted due to slow writing skills or trying to make writing more readable.
Conclusion
In a nutshell, everyone has their preference. It depends on you, whether you can sit in one test for a long time or you prefer to come back another day fresh. Another factor would be your intention to get an English proficiency certificate. But one thing is for sure, the way CELPIP is moving forward and Canada is becoming the dream of immigrants, the CELPIP test would be in a lead role in the future.
